The Other (FemaleVariations”
By Han Yali

“The Other (Female)”, not “The Other (Male)”, is our manifesto,“Variations” rather than“concertos” is our attitude.
"The Other", as a postcolonial theoretical term, was often mentioned by Husserl, Sartre and other philosophers at first. When translated into Chinese, it naturally became “The Other”. Here we can easily see that it is their right to establish the existence of “The Other”. Simone De Beauvoir once said in The Second Sex that a man will never take gender as a starting point to show himself. He does not have to declare that he is a man, but if I want to define myself, I must first say that I am a woman, and all discussions must be based on this premise. In Beauvoir's opinion, women are constructed, and this construction comes from men's watch and needs.
So how do you break this situation of being watched and constructed? I think the first is the awakening of female consciousness, the realization that we are being watched, constructed, and given this and that “shoulds” which are as the invisible shackles that bind us. So if you want to break this situation, someone has to speak up, someone has to fight and start a revolution. We should break away from this constructed role, turn from the watching logic of The Other to the perspective of “The Other (Female)”, and appeal to more women to awaken their self-consciousness from the inherent social instincts and habits! We hope that through the exhibition of “The Other (Female) Variations”, more people will understand the most authentic appearance of women born as women. In this exhibition, we invite nearly twenty works (groups) of thirteen artists, who will interpret the road of awakening for women through painting, installation, sculpture, video, behavior and other different creation methods.
At this point, when we talk about “The Other (Female)”, it is inevitably associated with feminism. Admittedly, “The Other (Female)” we emphasize here is neither a purely gender relationthe equal distribution of interests and rights, the absolute uniformity of the social division of labor, nor is it the complete disappearance of gender attributes. When we talk about women's problems, we are not fighting against gender, but advocating female consciousness. In my opinion, the awakening of female consciousness not only needs the transformation of the consciousness in the social environment but also needs the transformation of female self-knowledge and the affirmation of self-knowledge. Unlike Beauvoir, if I want to define myself, first of all, I will emphasize I am myself, this kind of “I am myself” is not agree with the empty signifier of rhetoric, but is with a deep sense of self which I am not only a female but also I am myself, thus, I will get a real impartiality about women by this kind of specific social breakout.
The second step of female consciousness awakening is women's liberation of self-cognition, which is realized from self-affirmation and positive response to the questioning eyes of others. Women's Liberation in the last century promoted women's social status, but the unique temperament that women were born with was also cut off in the revolution. The so-called “equality between men and women” is a kind of gender-free differentiation, which is the consistency of dress and behavior only. In fact, we never had a feminist movement, when western women were in the fight for their rights and interests, the essence of the seemingly vigorous revolution we were in was just to make women turn over to be the masters just as all the oppressed people, then, compared with western women to struggle for and obtain their rights, we seem to be comfortable in this kind of happiness. But it must be noted that this is by no means a liberation of women's self-cognition. The true self-liberation is how to remain self independent in the face of historical prejudices and conventions when faced with practical problems such as family and work. Women should get out of the moral cage preset by ourselves, release our own demands for respect, bravely defend our inner voice, shout for our own desires, face up to ourselves, and establish our own vision of the Other (female).
In my opinion, the liberation of self-cognition is a kind of deep-seated breakthrough, which mainly exists in the ideological level. This kind of breakthrough is the most essential, the most profound and the most difficult. Especially in the existing social system, the social reality that men are superior to women is still followed. Today, the standard for a successful woman is a combination of being fashionable, sophisticated, fit and financial independent. Under these series of concepts that portray women, people try to create a rosy picture of women's daily lives being superior to men's. They can switch freely between the hall and the kitchen, they are delicate and poetic, they always keep the enjoyable and comfortable appearances. However, the problem is that such female narration is not exactly what women want to express, nor can it represent the real living conditions of women as a whole. Similarly, this beautiful female image is examined by the eyes of men, and finally put forth through the words of men. Therefore, these images inevitably reflect a new desire and demand of men. The female image here is still manipulated and dominated by the male-dominated voice, and still has not got rid of the writing way of “role-playing”.
So how can women own their way of writing? It seems to me that “I am myself”, that it is natural, that there is no decision maker being relied on, and that there is a state of being that is at ease, self-originating, and self-so-ing. Women's liberation of self-cognition is not related to gender itself, but to make individual consciousness get out of the cage bound by traditional morality and to release themselves in an environment without the construction of others, every mountain is its own decider and every cloud is its own decider, and then, it returns to a state of its own spontaneousness.
